You can purchase copyrighted images using the photographic service

You can search for works in our collection with our Search the Collections-service. The permitted uses of the images depend on whether the images are copyrighted or whether their copyright term has expired. The Finnish National Gallery has released over 27,000 images into the public domain.

Copyrighted images are accompanied by a copyright notice “In Copyright”. If you would like to use these images, you can order them using the image order form. Image orders are subject to a fee.

Copyright-free images are labelled with the “Copyright Free” mark. These image files can be downloaded from the website and used free of charge.

  • On the Finnish National Gallery website, images are mainly in JPG format.
  • The photographic service delivers high-resolution images for printing and other uses.
  • The Finnish National Gallery and the customer make an agreement regarding the use of images.
  • The images ordered are delivered as links to digital files.
  • A fee is charged for the use of copyrighted images. Read more about the right to use our images.

Photographic service price list

An invoicing fee of €3 (€3.77 with VAT) is added to the total price. The price list is valid until further notice. Updated on September 1st 2024.

  • print run less than 2000, online publication: €80 (vat 0%), €100,40 (vat 25,5%)
  • print run of 2000 or over: €100 (vat 0%), €125,50 (vat 25,5%)
  • separate language versions and/or online edition at a 50% discount each
  • a double price charged for a cover image

  • theses, for the first image: €30 (vat 0%), €37,65 (vat 25,5%)

  • teaching materials: €30 (vat 0%), €37,65 (vat 25,5%)

  • €50 (vat 0%), €62,75 (vat 25,5%)

  • temporary exhibition (less than 12 months): €50 (vat 0%), €62,75 (vat 25,5%)
  • permanent exhibition or longer use: €100 (vat 0%), €125,50 (vat 25,5%)

  • handling fee for cancellation **): €30 per order (vat 0%), €37,65 per order (vat 25,5%)
  • renewal of an earlier order: -50 % discount on the original price

  • 20–39 images -10 %
  • more than 40 images -15 %

*) Foreign companies with a VAT identification or registration number are exempt from VAT in Finland.

Image order form

1) The requester acquires the right to use images owned by the Finnish National Gallery for the purpose specified in the agreement regarding the use of images. The use of images for any other purpose is prohibited.

2) The requester is responsible for any permissions and costs related to the artist’s copyright. The use of images must take into account the so-called moral rights for works in accordance with copyright law.

3) Images are delivered via a download link.

4) When publishing images, at least the following information must be provided: the author of the work, the name of the work, the date of the work, Finnish National Gallery Collection, information on the donation collection, if applicable, and the Finnish National Gallery / the name of the photographer as the source of the image.

5) Any further use of the image must be agreed upon separately.

6) We ask that the requester would provide one or two free copies of the publication to the Finnish National Gallery library, if the images are ordered for a printed publication. The free copies are to be delivered to: Finnish National Gallery library, Kaivokatu 2, 00100 Helsinki, FINLAND.

7) By accepting an image, the requester agrees to abide by the terms mentioned in this document. If you cancel your order, we will charge a €30 cancellation fee (+ invoicing fee and VAT). The agreement will be made in duplicate, one copy for each party.

Using our images

When you use our images, provide source information for them.

In the case of images of art works, information on the work and the photographer:

  • The name of the artist
  • The title and date of the work
  • technique, measurements
  • Finnish National Gallery Collection / Ateneum Art Museum OR Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma OR Sinebrychoff Art Museum, information on the donation collection, if applicable on the collection, if applicable
  • Photo: Finnish National Gallery / the name of the photographer

In the case of images of archive material, information and the photographer:

  • Information (case-by-case, e.g. name and date)
  • Finnish National Gallery Collection, information on the donation collection, if applicable
  • Photo: Finnish National Gallery OR Photo: Finnish National Gallery / the name of the photographer
